Which is Better, Laminate Flooring or SPC Flooring?

Jun. 07, 2021

Many people may mistakenly believe that SPC and laminate flooring are both the same, but they are not. But don't they look very similar? Well, it is true that it is difficult to distinguish SPC from laminate flooring visually. Nonetheless, there are many differences between the two types of flooring, and when you compare their composition, functions and features, you will be sure how different they are. The following is a comparison of laminate flooring and spc flooring shared with you by SPC Flooring Suppliers.

1. Core material

Generally speaking, both laminate flooring and SPC flooring are composed of 4 layers, namely the backing layer, the core layer, the printed design layer and the top wear layer. The difference lies in the material of each layer, especially the core material.

Laminate flooring: The core material used in this type of flooring is usually fiberboard. It can be either MDF or HDF, depending on the quality of the laminate flooring you choose. Higher quality laminate flooring uses water-resistant HDF as the core material. This helps improve the overall durability of the laminate flooring. Using compressed wood fibers as a core material also makes laminate flooring susceptible to existing problems similar to those found in wood flooring.

SPC Flooring: As the name implies, SPC flooring uses solid SPC as the core layer of material. Solid SPC is very dense, which makes it tough enough to withstand heavy foot traffic, durable, and of course, waterproof. In fact, some manufacturers also incorporate SPC into the backing layer.

2. Installation

It's safe to say that both laminate flooring and SPC Flooring have product lines that are suitable for DIY. The installation process may seem simple, but it still requires some experience and skill.

Laminate flooring: the laminate flooring card lock mechanism is a product line that simplifies the entire installation process. However, if not installed properly, moisture-sensitive seams and edges can cause serious damage to the floor if water penetrates. Specialized equipment, such as circular saws with specific blades and cutting tables, are required to prepare the laminate to match the measurements.

SPC flooring: Although you can find SPC flooring suitable for DIY, it may not be as easy as it seems. When installing sheet SPC flooring, you will need some skills such as applying glue evenly and cutting the sheets. If you are installing an SPC floor with a click-lock mechanism, you will also need to put in some extra effort.

3. Water resistance

Laminate flooring: As mentioned earlier, the core material of laminate flooring is made of wood fiber, so it is easily affected by water or moisture. Once the laminate flooring is in contact with water, problems such as swelling and edge curling are common.

SPC Flooring: Luxury SPC flooring is well water resistant. This is why you can see SPC flooring can be installed in wet areas such as bathrooms, laundry areas and kitchens.

4. Environmental impact

To be honest, both laminate and SPC flooring contain potentially toxic materials. One uses melamine and the latter uses PVC. melamine is known to be toxic by releasing formaldehyde gas, while PVC releases chlorine gas.

Laminate flooring: Laminate flooring is made with a fiberboard core and is absolutely recyclable. Guess what, some manufacturers actually recycle their used laminate flooring because 80% of the content can be recycled.

SPC Flooring: Since SPC flooring is made of non-biodegradable synthetic materials, it becomes an issue with post-use SPC. Proper disposal of SPC flooring helps prevent environmental contamination. Needless to say, SPC flooring is not recyclable.

5. Termite resistant

Laminate flooring: Since laminate flooring consists of wood materials, there is actually a risk of termite infestation. A laminate or tile infested with termites will eventually loosen, become brittle and lose its functionality.

SPC Flooring: SPC flooring is manufactured without using any wood materials, making it 100% termite resistant. So you don't have to worry about termite attacks.

6. Noise level

Laminate flooring: Since laminate flooring is not made of soundproof material, any noise generated by movement on the floor cannot be effectively absorbed. In short, you can say that walking on laminate flooring will produce a higher level of noise.

SPC flooring: Remember the solid core material mentioned earlier? It is this hard, solid core that helps to reduce noise levels and reduce noise when walking. However, you should always remember that SPC flooring comes in a wide range of qualities ...... Not all SPC flooring comes with a solid core. Of course, less solid SPC cores will have a lower level of sound insulation.

7. Flooring maintenance and cleaning

Laminate flooring: While it is said that laminate flooring is very simple and easy to clean, this is not the case when it comes to maintaining the floor. Laminate flooring is sensitive to moisture and water. If you use laminate flooring at home, make sure you keep your Laminate Flooring dry and avoid using a wet mop when cleaning.

SPC Flooring: Cleaning SPC flooring can be accomplished by sweeping and wet mopping. It is waterproof, but you still do not want any moisture or water to penetrate the joints. Therefore, you should avoid flooding the floor with water or steam mopping.

Which type of flooring is the best choice?

As you can see, there are many differences between both laminate and SPC flooring. When well taken care of, both are cost-effective and versatile options for homeowners. Ultimately, it all depends on your lifestyle needs and desired style. If you're still not sure which one to choose, you can always ask us for advice.
